In 2018 a new rail trail opened between Holmestrand and Sande. Seven kilometres of the old railway line, which has now been replaced by a double track, has become part of the coastal path (Kyststien) in Vestfold. The trail is lit and accessible for all users.

Old Holmestrand Station
If you arrive Holmestrand by train, take the northern exit towards the bus station, which is located at the old station area of 1881. Continue northwards pass the parking lot and cross the road. The trail starts about 200 metres north of Holmestrand fjordhotell.

Tvillingbru Halt
When you have passed the first houses on the left, you have arrived Tvillingbru Halt, which was closed in 1945. On your right is a rest area with a climbing installation, shed and benches if you need a break.

Smørstein Tunnel
After a sharp bend, the rail trail enters the 288-metre Smørstein Tunnel. It is lit with white and coloured light, so there's not need for a flashlight.

Smørstein Station
When you exit the tunnel, the coastal path continues on the west side of the road. Smørstein Station was on the right just before the crossroads. After passing a deep rock cut you reach Bogen. If you go up to the top of the viewpoint on the right, you get a great view of the fjord.

Øgarden
After two kilometres the coastal path ends at a crossroads. Turn right on the gravel road until it crosses the county road. Continue north on the road Gamleveien, which is the original part of the coastal path until the railway corrdior was rerouted.

Sande Station
Sande Station is located on the left side of the main street, close the to bus terminal. If you are hungry, you should try a tasty meal at Stasjonsgaarden, which is situated in the old railway station. Continue about 300 metres until you see a white building to the right. Upstairs you will find old photos of the Vestfold Line and Sande Station.
