The Tinfoss Paper Mill Railway opened around 1900 to transport timber and pulp between the factory and the steamship quay at Notodden. Today the corridor is a lovely rail trail that follows the river Tinnåa closely from Heddalsvegen to the World Heritage Centre. You will pass the old power station Tinfos II, a timer slide and several other cultural memories on your way.

Old Overhead Power Line Masts
The rail trail starts at Heddalsvegen where the road crosses the river Tinnåa. Pay attention to the two preserved overhead power line masts on the bridge. The overhead line followed the railway up to the first power station Tinfos I from 1901 and is today a cultural memory.

Tinfos II
After one kilometre you will pass Tinfos II, a large, pink building of 1912. On the wall you will find a tourist information board about the power station and the 900-metre Holta canal. The round rocks along the road are actually old grinding stones, used in the pulp production.

Tinfos Paper Mill
The white building close to the power station is the old headquarters of the paper mill of 1908. The railway used to cross the bridge over the river to the left. Under the bridge you will see the well-preserved timber slide which is four kilometre long. It was built to lead the logs pass the dammed canal.

The World Heritage Centre
After you have crossed the bridge you will find the first power station Tinfos I to the left. The building to the right is where the pulp was produced with the grinding stones. The Telemark Gallery and the World Heritage Centre are also situated here. Here you can learn how the arc furnace and mineral fertilisers were invented and hear the unique history of local hydropower, industry and society. The centre is open all the year round.
