Distance: Duration: Terrain: Level: Type:
16 km 4 hours Path Medium Hikes
"The Station Trail" goes between Stange and Tange stations through a nature reserve. You will pass abandoned homesteads and cultural monuments, such as the cave where Russian prisoners of war were hiding after they escaped from a prisoner transport in 1942.

From Stange station follow Kristian Fjeld Street southwards and continue to the right on the cycle path along Ljøstadvegen. The blue-marked trail starts outside the sports hall Stangehallen. First it passes through a residential area until it continues southwards into the forest.

Geocaching
If you're a geocacher you can find as many as 14 caches along the trail. The first is located close to the nature reserve Vålemyra. The next one is situated only a couple of hundred metres away, close to the ski jump Kjernlibakken. Only the fundament remains after it closed down in 1935.

Henrikstua
After you have passed the farm Våleødegården the trail continues into a lovely coniferous forest. You will soon arrive Henrikstua, a croft from the 19th century. On the tourist information board you can read (in Norwegian) about the widow Petra Olsdatter and her son Anders Hansen, who lived here. Anders ran the farm and also repaired shoes to boost his income.

Russian Hide
The trail crosses the county road and continues southwards. After passing over a stream the route goes along a gravel road. The detour to the Russian Hide ("e;Russerhula"e;) is highly recommended. This cave is signposted and situated only a couple of hundred metres away. Two Russian prisoners of war were hiding here after they escaped from a railway transport in April 1942. People living around this area gave them food and clothes, and later helped them to cross the border to Sweden.

Halvorstua
Continue on the blue-marked trail into the woods. This part goes uphill until you reach the croft Halvorstua, the highest point on the trip. From here you will get a great view towards the village Vallset. There used to be several other crofts in this area as well.

Tangen
The rest of the route goes mostly downhill. When you're passing an abandoned house, you have arrived the croft Fallet. Only two timber houses remain today. You need to cross the river Vikselva before you reach Tangen station. There used to be a waterfall here, but it was removed after a power station was built in 1902.
