In 2022 a new rail trail opened on the Kragerø Line between Neslandsvatn and Merkebekk. It offers great views of several lakes and crosses a railway bridge.
Eskilt Halt
Notice the remaining track on the ground when you cross the road Stengerveien. Here Eskilt Halt was located to the right, and this is also where the rail trail starts, which opened in Autumn 2022. From here you will follow a gravel pathway pass idyllic lakes in beautiful surroundings until you reach Merkebekk.
Heldøla Halt
After you have crossed a railway bridge, the trail follows the river one kilometre until it reaches Heldøla Halt, which is located in an open area. The rail trail continues along the highway close to the mountain side. Here you will have a stunning view over the lake Nedre Toke on your way. After a long right turn, the Kragerø Line passes through a long rockcut in a deserted area.
Merkebekk Station
After one kilometre the trail will follow the highway until it reaches Merkebekk. The railway bridge to Merkebekk Station has been dismantled, so you must cross the road if you want to take a closer look at the station area. Follow the path close to the lake and climb up to the railway path. Here you will find several sleepers on the ground and a red, well-preserved station building.
