The Malvik Trail

Distance: Duration: Terrain: Level: Type:
3 km 1 hour Gravel road Easy Hikes
The almost three kilometre long Malvik Trail opened in 2016 and follows a disused part of the Nordland Line between Nygården and Muruvika. The rail trail follows the coastline tightly and is accessible for wheelchair users as well as bikers and hikers.

When Gevingåsen tunnel opened between Hommelvik and Hell in 2011, the Malvik Trail opened along the old corridor on 15 June 2016. It's now part of the coastal path between Trondheim and Stjørdal. Several information boards are placed along this cultural trail. Here you can read about the tragic Hommelvik disaster and the chaussee of 1859 that followed the same route until the railway opened in 1881.

The Hazardous Impregnation Industry
The Malvik Trail starts at Nygården near the marina. If you have suitable footwear, you can start 300 metres further south and follow the overgrown railway corridor from there. The impregnation centre of 1925, ran by Norwegian State Railways (NSB), used to be at Nygården where railway sleepers and utility poles were impregnated. This industry have had a negative environmental impact as a result of creosote waste materials. In 2011 the Norwegian National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket) removed polluted masses from this area.

The Hommelvik Disaster
You will pass a memorial plaque after you have crossed a bridge. On the information board you can read about the train accident which occurred on 19 November 1940. The northbound train from Trondheim was supposed to wait for the southbound train at Hommelvik station, but left the station area earlier than expected. 23 people lost their lives and 47 were injured, an incident which became Norway's fourth-worst train disaster in history.

The Chaussee of 1859
The rail trail continues along the coast and passes the old station area of Solbakken halt. After 500 metres you will see the remains of a chaussee on your right, close to the steep mountainside. This is where the old road between Trondheim and Stjørdal ran. There is also an information board here where you can read about this historic route of 1859.

Spectacular view
Soon you will walk along a safety fence on your left. It was installed because the terrain is especially steep round the headland Svartneset. There are many benches here where you can sit down and enjoy the spectacular view of the Stjørdalsfjord. When you continue the last kilometre towards Muruvika you will pass a yellow railway sign on your right. The digit 27 indicates the distance to Trondheim in kilometres. When the rail trail ends a couple of hundreds metres ahead, you have several options. You can either return back to Hommelvik, take the short detour to the islet Flatholmen or continue on the trail along the track to Muruvika.

How do I get there?

Local train to Hommelvik station on the Trønder Line or bus 70 from Trondheim towards Stjørdal to Solbakken stop.
